Remembering an Army Post That Once Called Würzburg Home

For those who were stationed at Leighton Barracks, many of these places will look familiar. These photographs were taken in 2011, only a few years after the U.S. Army left Würzburg, preserving the post during its final days before redevelopment began. The buildings, roads, and open areas reflect a place where generations of Soldiers served, trained, worked, and built lasting friendships. Originally built as a German Luftwaffe airfield in 1936, Leighton Barracks became home to the U.S. Army after World War II and, for many years, to the legendary 1st Infantry Division – the Big Red One. Today, the mission has changed, but for the thousands of Soldiers, civilians, and family members who once called this post home, the memories remain.
