For decades, the former U.S. Army installations in Würzburg, Giebelstadt, Kitzingen, and Schweinfurt were among the most important American military posts in Southern Germany. After the Army pulled out between 2006 and 2014, these once heavily guarded bases changed forever. Barracks became neighborhoods, colleges, businesses—or simply disappeared from the map.
This photo gallery captures that transition with thousands of historic images, preserving places and moments that are gone for good. This is probably the largest private photo collection of former U.S. Army installations in Würzburg, Giebelstadt, Kitzingen, and Schweinfurt—with more than 7,300 photos!
Many of these shots were taken right after the troops packed up and headed home, documenting the bases before redevelopment began and recording a unique chapter of U.S. Army history in Germany.
