Faulenberg Kaserne was one of Würzburg’s old-school strongpoints, built way back in the 1800s and later pulled into the U.S. Army footprint after WWII. Once the Americans took over, the place turned into a full-on support hub — home of the Facility Engineers, the folks who kept the whole Würzburg AO running: power, roads, HVAC, buildings, you name it.
HQ brass for civilian and personnel affairs was parked there too, making Faulenberg the behind-the-wire nerve center for admin, logistics, and infrastructure across the Würzburg Military Community.
When the Army started packing up in 2007, the post went dark — gates locked, motor pool silent, zero traffic. Since then it’s been sitting like a ghosted installation, a classic Franconia lost place.
Now the city’s looking to repurpose the AO, flipping an old Army workhorse into a new chapter for Würzburg.
