Leighton Barracks was one of those old-school U.S. Army posts sitting up on a hill in the Hubland area of Würzburg. The place originally kicked off back in ’36 when the Luftwaffe built Würzburg Air Base — just a German airfield before the war flipped the script. After WWII, the U.S. military took over and ran the place all the way up until it shut down in 2008.

The post was named after CPT John A. Leighton, and for decades it was a solid, no-nonsense Army installation - complete with an airfield that handled medevacs, supply runs, and whatever else needed to get done. After the Army packed up and rolled out, the area got a whole new mission. Since 2012, most of the old housing and barracks blocks have been turned into classrooms and student dorms for the University of Würzburg. And since 2018, the spot officially counts as part of the Frauenland district.
